Ask a Professional - November 2006Ok, last month you told me to use specialty contractors for the job I need done, but I have a large job, extending my house. You say I need to plan for this job? How do I do this???In this case since you have more then 2 unrelated trades it’s best to use a licensed general contractor… But FIRST you need to know what you want. Just saying you want to add more space to your house will only confuse anyone your bringing into the project. Be realistic when adding space. Kitchens, are by far the costliest room in the house, bathrooms are 2nd. If land space is not available adding a room above an existing garage is very reasonable, cost and convenience wise. Here’s a reality check: Any custom building costs start around $135 s.f. in general. (CUSTOM meaning not tract or cookie cutter work) It’s not unusual to spend around $200 s.f. for a kitchen or bath remodeling job. Next month we’ll go into the actual planning and it is a step you shouldn’t pass on. |
